“The eye is always caught by light,
Gregory Maguire
but shadows have more to say.”
A short tale narrated by the most abstract aspect of the human body, its shadow, speaking about the simplicity of complicated mathematical concepts and the complexity of simple geometrical shapes, while creating a metaphor for life.
A person is obsessively walking and dancing on successively smaller and smaller squares. Following a spatial journey inspired by fractal geometry, she reaches the point when she is unable to fit in the square in physical space and human scale. Her dance is narrated her shadow, projected on a white wall. While her shadow’s journey shows how close mathematical simplicity and complexity come when they are deeply looked at, her shadow asks:
Can a shadow be as accurate as an equation and as expressive as a feeling?
“Squared” film is a product of the ongoing practice-as-research project, “Performing Geometries”, where she pursues to embody three regular polygons, the square, the triangle and the never-met circle, through dance repetition. “Squared” films presents her dancing exploration of the square shape.
